Bulleit 95 Rye: The Spicy American Rye That Put 95/5 on the Map

There are ryes that whisper, ryes that swagger, and then there’s Bulleit 95 Rye — a whiskey that walks into the glass wearing cowboy boots and immediately makes its presence known.

First released in 2011, Bulleit Rye quickly became one of the most recognisable American ryes on the market. The reason is hiding in plain sight on the bottle: that famous 95% rye, 5% malted barley mash bill. It is an unusually rye-heavy recipe, delivering the spicy, herbal character that makes rye whiskey such a brilliant alternative to the sweeter, corn-led profile of bourbon. Bulleit itself describes the whiskey as rich, spicy and complex, with oak, vanilla, honey and a crisp, lingering finish.

And importantly, the “95” doesn't mean 95 proof. This is a 90-proof whiskey, or 45% ABV. The number is all about the grain bill — a distinction worth remembering when somebody inevitably asks why their bottle of “95 Rye” isn't actually 47.5% ABV.

A Rye With Serious Spice

Pour it into a glass and the colour is a handsome russet-gold. The nose is where the rye really starts making its case: think fresh spice, pepper, oak and a touch of sweetness underneath.

On the palate, Bulleit Rye has plenty of attitude. Black pepper and baking spice sit alongside vanilla, honey and woody notes, with the dry, herbal character of rye keeping everything nicely taut. Bulleit describes the finish as crisp and clean, while independent tasting notes commonly pick out flavours such as mint, cinnamon, clove, cedar and vanilla.

The beauty of the 95/5 recipe is that the rye doesn't merely make a cameo appearance. It drives the show.

That makes Bulleit Rye particularly effective in cocktails. A Manhattan, Old Fashioned or Sazerac gets a serious injection of spice and structure without the whiskey disappearing beneath the other ingredients. Indeed, Bulleit says the Rye was created in response to bartenders looking for a rye with more edge in cocktails.

The Indiana Connection

Here’s where the Bulleit story gets particularly interesting for whiskey geeks.

Although Bulleit now has its own impressive distilling operation in Shelbyville, Kentucky, the standard Bulleit Rye has a long-established relationship with Indiana distilling. Recent reporting confirms that the signature rye recipe continues to be distilled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, before being aged and developed for Bulleit.

That Indiana connection matters because the 95/5 rye recipe became something of a calling card for Lawrenceburg producer MGP. During the American rye revival, the mash bill became closely associated with a number of whiskey brands — and Bulleit was one of the most prominent names to bring that style to a huge audience.

So while the Bulleit name is now firmly planted in Kentucky, don't assume every drop carrying that label came out of the Shelbyville stills.

And that brings us neatly to the distillery itself.

From Frontier Whiskey to Modern Kentucky

Bulleit Distilling Co.'s modern distillery in Shelbyville opened in 2017, with the visitor experience following in 2019. The facility represents the brand's modern approach to whiskey production, with technology and sustainability playing a major role.

Bulleit's Kentucky story also has an important historic chapter at Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville. The legendary site opened in 1935 and, after production eventually ceased, was reopened to the public in 2014. It subsequently became home to the Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Experience.

There's something rather fitting about that journey: a brand with an old-fashioned bottle and frontier-inspired identity now sits alongside a thoroughly modern distillery operation, while its rye retains a connection to one of America's most important rye-producing traditions.

So, Is Bulleit 95 Rye Worth Your Time?

Absolutely — particularly if you like your whiskey with a little electricity.

At 45% ABV, it has enough weight to stand up in a cocktail but remains approachable enough to sip neat. The 95% rye mash bill gives it a distinctly spicy personality, while vanilla, honey and oak provide enough sweetness and roundness to stop it becoming a one-dimensional pepper bomb.

It also deserves credit for something that isn't always easy to achieve: consistency and recognisability. You can pour Bulleit Rye for a whiskey drinker who knows their ryes and they'll immediately understand what you're putting in the glass.

For me, that's the real charm of Bulleit 95 Rye. It isn't trying to be an impossibly old, ultra-rare collector's dram. It is a confident, punchy American rye that knows exactly what it wants to be — spicy, woody, slightly sweet and wonderfully cocktail-friendly.

And when a whiskey has “95” written on the bottle, you know precisely where the attitude comes from.

Verdict: 🌾🌾🌾🌾 4/5

Best enjoyed: Neat, over a large cube, or stirred into a proper Manhattan.
